The Maggie Thatcher Legacy-- Thirty Years Ago Today

Thirty years ago today, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of Great Britain. Thatcher took office after a long period of Labour Party rule, but Thatcher's common sense conservatism propelled the Conservative Party (aka the Tories) back into power. The United Kingdom had endured a period of economic decline, but Thatcher promoted tax cuts and spending cuts. Long moving toward socialism, Thatcher
encouraged private intiatives. With the British Empire in decline, Margaret Thatcher boosted the strength of the British military and encouraged British standing in the world. Thatcher's swift action in the Falklands War brought a revival of British patriotism. The United States and, in particular, Ronald Reagan, had no better friend than Margaret Thatcher. In fact, Lady Thatcher spoke, by video, at the funeral of President Reagan.
Margaret Thatcher is the only woman to ever serve as Prime Minister of Great Britain and served in that position longer than any individual since Lord Liverpool in the Nineteenth Century.
Thirty years ago... and the world is better to have had Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher on the scene.

Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were principled conservatives in a far more liberal DC and controlled information stream by the Big Media, and yet prevailed because they spoke to the people and didn't water down their stands. Oh, if the GOP would find such leaders today. I am hopeful that Huckabee or some others will arise to lead. But, too many GOPers are falling into this trap of moving to the middle. If voters wanted to do that, they wouldn't have stayed home in droves this past election. The turnout was about the same as 04, but Obama had much higher numbers with youth and minorities. Who stayed home????

A leading progressive Baptists told me he had a conversation with Ed Young in the early 80's about Young's involvement with the "conservative resugence".
Young told him: The whole world is going to the Right, Maggie Thatcher, Ronald Reagan and I want to go to.
UABham proff Glenn Feldman spells it out in his collection of essays Religion and Politics in the White South.
And on Sunday May 3 Bham Southern Proff Natalie Davis who team teaches with Bama Baptist celelbrity Pam Huff had a scathing article on talk radio that messes with the headset of Bamians to the detriment of progress in the state.
Rick Lance and Bob Terry should speak directly to both concerns.

Anonymous I is none other than the lovable and gracious Don Wallace.  However, anonymous  II has the conspicuous and DNA footprints and putrid odor of Steven Fox od Collinsville AL.  Why is he so ashamed to put his name here?  He then could claim that he has "Been Published."  As for Maggie Thatcher; she, like Churchhill, was a Legend in her own mind !!!
